Tips to Support the Scene During Covid-19

Amidst the concerns that have been created from the Covid-19 pandemic, we at Obscura Undead have been gathering tips and suggestions on how we can show continued support to those who work to create the art we love so much in our scene.  As a community built around supporting and promoting bands, artists, venues, shops and all of the behind-the-scenes people associated with making the alternative subculture run,  it’s been heart breaking to see these people taking such a devastating loss to their livelihoods.

While many of us are now confined to being at home for an unknown amount of time, we also wanted to find ways that one could keep connected to the goth community. Here are just a few ideas of how you can help support the scene globally and for yourself. Please keep in mind that some of these ideas are applicable only if you feel you’re in a financial position to do such. We hope to keep updating this list with ideas to help us all out during these very trying times. If you have ideas or suggestions to add to this, please reach out to us.

1.       Bandcamp.com

This solution is the most obvious one to us. Many artists are on this platform and it’s also a way to discover new acts as well. During these times, many artists are offering “name your price” deals as well. On Friday, March 20th, Bandcamp will be waiving their cut of sales to further help artists out.

2.       Band Merchandise

A big part of how bands make money during their live shows is through their merch table. Check out the websites of some of your favorite acts and see what they are selling online. It’s a great way to get a new patch for your battle jacket.

3.      Record Label Deals

Some labels are even going as far to offer “name your price” deals. Artoffact Records being one of them. Check around and see what your favorite label may be offering. https://artoffact.com/

4.       Virtual Servers/ Bartenders

Currently, only three cities are setup for this, but it’s easy to see this working in other communities as well. Consider helping by using a virtual tipping system. Each time you pour yourself a drink, consider tipping though Venmo or Cash App a local service industry worker.

5.       Live Streaming

Some bands are already trying this out, offering live streamed performances. These free shows may have a virtual tip jar setup while they broadcast.

Obscura Undead will be doing multiple live streams throughout this as well on YouTube, talking with various contributors and touching on various subjects. The first will be on March 19th for a discussion on sexuality in the goth scene. The panel will include voices representing perspectives from asexual, queer, cishet, kinky and poly individuals.  We will also be doing our first virtual nightclub on March 21st at 9:45PM Eastern Standard Time as well. There will be six virtual rooms setup with five DJs spinning various styles of goth and alternative music and one room hosted by skullgirdle RIP doing live tarot readings.

6.       Support Small Retailers

As many smaller brick and mortar stores are having to shut down normal operations, many are also starting to sell online. Check and see if your favorite goth/alternative store is offering sales through online market places like eBay.  You may be able to find some great deals and you could be helping keep some small business and their employees afloat.

7.       Make Your Own Goth Club

This one sounds silly, but fun. Setup your home or bedroom like it’s your own goth club.  If you don’t have decorations or lighting, just use your imagination. Setup a playlist of all your favorite artists and just dance. Or don’t. Sit in a corner and just listen to the music you love. Have a video chat with friends while doing it. Get involved in the goth online communities.
