Montreal based post-punk band Broken Column released their self-produced debut EP “Intuition” earlier this week on July 31st. Formed in the spring of 2018 and “having already played in punk bands together (Disposer, Repulsives, Talleen), Alexandre Savard (guitar) and Max Seaton (bass) decided to start a project dedicating to their mutual love of early 80s post-punk and new-wave. They were soon joined by singer Alex Cyprine (Qúetzal Snakes, Deaf, Orchids) and Keyboardist Stephen Baird (Bland, Orchids) and named themselves Broken Column after a verse from [T.S. Eliot’s 1925 poem “The Hollow Men”].”
”Intuition” certainly is heavily post-punk and 80’s inspired, and classic influences like Joy Division and Brian Eno are heard intertwined with retro-modern backbeats and dirge-like vocals. Overall, Broken Column’s music is a despairing yet intriguing mix of tight guitar and synth melodies with throbbing bass undertones. The retro goth throwback instrumentals are the high point of the album and tracks like Mirror, Obsess, and Father are gems not to be missed. Unlike the world’s end of T.S. Eliot’s own hollow men, Broken Column debuts not with a wimper but with a bang.
Check out Broken Column live in Montreal tonight at their official release party: 08.01 † Deliluh † Broken Column (Lancement EP) + Hélène Barbier. In the meantime, you can find their music on Bandcamp here and keep up with them on Facebook here
Eyes I dare not meet in dreams
In death's dream kingdom
These do not appear:
There, the eyes are
Sunlight on a broken column
There, is a tree swinging
And voices are
In the wind's singing
More distant and more solemn
Than a fading star.T.S. Eliot “The Hollow Men” 1925
